FAQ10: Tutoring

QUESTION:
Where can I get tutoring or help in writing and mathematics?
ANSWER:
Academic Support Programs provide free peer tutoring in major subjects and the core curricula. These tutors have demonstrated mastery of the subject matter and maintain a high cumulative grade point average. Each term the available tutors are listed online and on bulletin boards at key campus locations. Learn more about Peer Tutoring. Students can also find tutors listed at these campus locations:
- Third floor Main at the bulletin board outside room 304,
- McAuley Education Center (Wayne Street) at the bulletin board across from room 103,
- Mercyhurst Athletic Center in the office of Coach Cippilone, M101A.
It is the student's responsibility to contact and plan meeting times with a tutor.
If no tutor is available, students can leave a request, and the tutoring coordinator will attempt to locate a qualified student. This process most often takes 7 to 10 days; therefore, students should use the instructor's office hours and any peer support currently available. For special assistance, faculty should contact Linda Linville, Tutoring Coordinator, llinville@mercyhurst.edu, x2302, Main 304.
Writing Center tutors help students improve the focus, organization, and fluency of their written work. These consultations can benefit any Mercyhurst student, whether a first-year student writing a paper for College Writing I or a senior revising an application essay for law school. Moreover, writers bring in papers from all classes, not just English courses, and may work with a tutor on their draft at any stage of its completion. Students sign up for a half-hour consultation by calling the Center at 824-2303 or writing their names on the schedule affixed to the Center door (Hammermill room 127). Alternatively, they may drop in during our open hours and see if a tutor is available. Center hours are Monday-Thursday 10-5; 7-9; Friday 10-5; and Sunday 1-9. In addition to consultations, the Center provide a number of services to the college community, such as The Writing Post newsletter, handouts on writing issues, resource books, and computers with access to the internet.
The Mercyhurst College Math Lab, located in its new home in room 304B in the Hammermill Library, provides mathematical assistance to fellow students in all disciplines of mathematical concepts. The Math Lab, staffed by a professional instructor and trained student tutors who are mostly math majors, assists fellow students with their mathematical studies. Mercyhurst Faculty can request and distribute "bookmarks" from the Math Lab which provide information on the location and specific hours of operation for this free service. The Math Lab also has several additional available resources to help aid the student including appropriate math videos, textbooks, computer software and a quiet atmosphere where learning is conducive. The Math Lab is normally open Sunday through Thursday and specific operating hours can be found by calling 824-2078.
